Olathe Rotary Travels with Heart to Heart International to Guatemala, November 2009

The Olathe Rotary Club, which supports Heart to Heart International and "Elizabeth's Kids" (Deb's House Orphanage), sends club members to Guatemala once or twice a year to help with water sustainability and community development efforts.

This blog will report on the team's sojourn near Lago de Atitlan during the week of November 4th through the 11th, 2009.

And We're Off ... Almost

So what were you doing at 430 this morning? Having fun? Sweet dreams? Enjoying the morning air?

Well, the HHI/Rotary Team was waiting to board our flight to Houston. The lines were short and the check in pleasant as those things go. Jon dropped us off so we were done before we knew it. So like the Army, it's hurry up and wait.

We'll be meeting Judy Johnson in Houston and flying on later today. Her flight from Jacksonville, OR was delayed by fog or some such thing. So we'll meet her there as our party grows: kind of a seven Samurai thing. The initial weather reports are for rain and thunderstorms. Jon has promised clear skies and we're going to hold him to that.

As we were waiting Dan Cool (His name really is "Cool".) an engineer with Garmin joined us to scope out a site for a new clinic near Lago de Atitlan. (I'll get more pictures later.)

Wilma has proven to be the wise one so far. She brought herself a cheese sandwich.

  1. Thanks for the update, Michael. We spent a lot of time today encouraging members to read your blog and post a message. We'll see what happens. Jerry Yoesel, a new member, included you guys in his prayer to the group. We know you're doing good work, so be careful. Hi to Jon. Tell him I'm keeping an eye on his back yard. What's with all those leaves?

Take care guys. Can't wait for next update.

  3. Alma is excited to hear you are in Guatemala. She grew up in Guatemala City near the Mormon temple. She said to tell you not to drink the water. I told her that was why you all are there!

  4. O.K., Michael, great photos, but if you do any more videos, I think you should comb your hair first. Actually, you're doing a great job of reporting and all of us really appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Being able to communicate like this really makes it fun.
